The India cycling tour through Tamil Nadu and Kerala is rich in experience, a great insight into this fantastic region, its culture and enjoy it from the unique vantage point of a bicycle. Routes are planned mostly via village roads providing information on the history, cultural background, tradition and architecture in the various places. We start cycle journey from the Mahabalipuram, home of great rock art, Pondicherry former French enclave, Great temples of Madurai & Tanjore and unique history and beauty from the spice growing heartland of Kerala to the lush mountains and finish our bicycle tour at historic fort Kochi on the West Coast.
Cycling / Terrain
The tour is designed to enjoy the cycling through the rural life and meet the local people of South India. The vehicle will accompany and en-route make stop for bottled water and Juices for the cyclist. A nice way of sharing different experiences encountered on the way. The bike support vehicle will always travel behind the last cyclist. If you wish to take a break from riding than wait at the side of the road and supporting vehicle will pick you up.
Weather
January to mid-April and October to December is the best time to cycle in Rajasthan. Average temperatures range from max of 25°C and minimum of 7°C. The desert sun is not so intense and the days are cool and pleasant, perfect for cycling. Please bring a sun hat, sun cream and sunglasses. The mornings and evenings are generally cool and mild, however, January and late December can be very cold. Please bring a jumper/windcheater and a sweater/shawl. Chennai - Mahabalipuram - Pondicherry - Thanjavore - Pudukottai -Madurai - Varkala - Kovalam
Day 1: Arrival Chennai – Mahabalipurum |
The tour leader will meet you at Chennai airport and then will transfer in the hotel in Mahabalipurum. The cycles will be assembled after breakfast for a test ride in and around Mahabalipurum. We will have experience of magnificent work of Rock Cut Caves and Temples in Mahabalipurum. The road is flat for 35kms ride. We will be back for overnight stay in the hotel.
Day 2: Mahabalipurum | (Cycling 35 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |
We will examine thoroughly the small town of Mahabalipurum. Exploring Mahabalipurum can be done either by cycles or by walk. The guide will take us to visit temples. Some mementos will be seen at the fixed-price like Handicrafts Emporium and smaller craft shops those are lined-up on the main road. We can spend big part of the day by taking sunbath at the beach with a constant flow of beer.
Day 3: Mahabalipurum - Pondicherry | (Cycling 70 Kms / Terrain: Medium) |
This day we have to ride a little more as compared to yesterday to arrive Pondicherry by the evening. The course is easy for movement and is spotted with small fishing villages. Pondicherry, a former French colony has its impact felt by way of Architectural buildings, cobble-stoned streets and restaurants. We will check in for home stay and will be out in the evening for city tour. We will walk through main Goubert Avenue in the evening where almost the entire town gathers to have sea breeze that makes pleasant weather.
Day 4: Pondicherry | (Cycling 38 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |
In Pondicherry you can watch many things. You will have to wake up early morning and will be provided a guide map of the town. Accordingly you have to adjust yourselves to see the town at your own pace. The highlights of the town are Aurobindo Ashram, Vinayaka Temple, Churches and a museum. It is motivating to see the French and the Hindu cultures meet here flawlessly.
Day 5: Pondicherry – Chidambaram | (Cycling 70 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |
After having breakfast we will move on. On the route we will stop at melon fields or other seasonal crops. We will visit the Nataraja Temple in the afternoon which is the holiest Hindu shrine in Southern India which is also a highlight of Dravidian architecture.
Day 6: Chidambaram – Kumbakonam | (Cycling 75 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |
There are 18 temples which have various evidences to the former power and importance of the town Kumbakonam situated at Kaveri delta (Chola Nadu). Kaveri Delta is the agricultural centre of Tamil Nadu. We will visit the Sarangapani Temple, the most powerful in all the temples.
Day 7: Kumbakonam – Thanjavore | (Cycling 45 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |
This is the capital of Chola Empire. Here we see more historical sites, such as Brihadishwara Temple, the Emperor’s Palace and the Fortress. In Tanjavore, we will stay in TTDC Hotel Tamil Nadu which was a guest house of former Maharajas. The rooms are spacious having a shady garden with full of flowers.
Day 8: Thanjavore | (No Cycling) |
In the morning light we can again visit the temple and fortress. Visit to town’s museum to gain knowledge about ancient times. After the visit we have got shopping opportunities or to get ourselves relaxed in the hotel garden.
Day 9: Thanjavore – Pudukottai | (Cycling 62 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |
Today we will experience the rural life in Tamil Nadu. We will see crops of cashew or ground nuts. There will be women groups dressed colourfully in the fields. We have plenty of photo sessions today with plugging fields, which reminds of the past time. Oxcart is also seen which is still effective and cheap source of transportation in the rural areas. Day 10: Pudukottai – Karaikkudi | (Cycling 47 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |
Will continue cycling through rural Tamil Nadu which will be relaxed tour. We will climb the Thirumayam Fort. Here we will stop nearby Chettinadu Mansion. The Mansion will tell us a lot about the wealth and splendours of the Chettiyars, who produced their own cuisine too.
Day 11: Karaikkudi – Madurai | (Cycling 65 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |
The cycling will end today through rural Tamil Nadu at Mellure to avoid the heavy traffic close to the town. After we have reached Mellure, transfer to Hotel. We will spend the following two nights here. We will enter the heart of Madurai to explore Sri Meenakshi Temple and the market areas nearby.
Day 12: Madurai – Kumily | (Cycling 25 Kms / Terrain Medium) |
Having breakfast in the morning you will start cycling in flat areas thereafter a short but steep climb up to Kumily. We will overnight in the spice plantation, where the owner himself will introduce about the spices and tropical fruits. If desire, you option to buy tea and spices from here.
Day 13: Kumily – Kanjirappalli – Ashtamudi Lake | (Cycling 68 Kms / Terrain: Medium) |
There will be a another climb today through tea plantations followed by a amazing 20 km long downhill section. One should not be in a hurry otherwise he can miss magnificent views which can be pictured. We have to face undulated roads down in the plains through rubber plantations. When lunch and refreshment is taken we transfer you to a different world into Kollam Backwaters and the stay will be at Lakeside hotel at Ashtamudi Lake.
Day 14-15 : Ashtamudi Lake Munroe Island | (No Cycling) |
Now, we have your own two days free time for leisure and also you can enjoy the cuisine of Kerala and life in the backwaters.
Day 17: Ashtamudi – Varkala Beach | (Cycling 55 Kms / Terrain: Easy) |

The immense and final stage will be covered on narrow coastal roads to witness endless rows of palm trees, disrupted only by a bypass for Trivandrum International Airport. At the final point of our cycling tour Kovalam Beach, it is forgotten when we step into our hotel.
